Frustration Tolerance Worksheets for Teens

Help teens understand their frustration, recognize when it’s building, and develop practical ways to handle it.

Frustration is part of everyday life, but knowing what to do when things feel difficult, unfair, or just aren’t going to plan is a skill that takes practice.

This Frustration Tolerance Workbook for Teens helps young people explore their own frustration patterns and build a set of strategies they can actually use. Rather than simply telling teens to “calm down,” the activities help them understand what is happening, pause when they need to, work with unhelpful thoughts, problem-solve, and decide how they want to respond.

Throughout the workbook, teens are encouraged to notice what works for them and gradually build their own personalized Frustration Plan.

What Teens Will Explore

Understanding Frustration
Teens explore what frustration is, what it can feel like in the body, common teen frustration triggers, and their own personal patterns. They’ll also learn about the Window of Tolerance and use a Frustration Thermometer to recognize different levels of frustration.

Building a Coping Toolbox
Teens try different ways to manage frustration, including breathing, taking space, grounding, movement, talking or writing things out, and trying something different. Activities help them identify which strategies are most useful for them.

Frustration Thoughts & Helpful Thinking
Teens look at how thoughts can add to frustration and practice noticing unhelpful thoughts, asking whether those thoughts are helping, and finding a more helpful way to think about the situation. This section also explores growth mindset and self-talk.

Problem-Solving When Frustrated
Teens learn how to decide whether a problem can be solved and work through practical problem-solving steps. They practice understanding the problem, considering possible solutions, choosing what to try, and thinking about what to do when there isn’t a simple solution.

When Something Feels Unfair
Because unfairness can be a powerful frustration trigger, teens explore when it may be worth speaking up, when they may need to let something go, and how to respond more thoughtfully instead of reacting immediately.

Creating a Personal Frustration Plan
The final section brings everything together. Teens look back at how they respond to frustration, identify their patterns, choose the coping tools and strategies they want to remember, and create a personal plan they can return to when frustration shows up.
